About

Alex Katz (1927- ) focuses on portraits and landscapes. His work, characterized by simple, bold compositions, bold coloring, and restrained moods, exemplifies contemporary realism at the intersection of abstraction and figuration, tradition and avant-garde. His work is in the collections of over one hundred institutions worldwide, including the MOMA, the Whitney, and the Tate Modern. Of his flower series, the artist says "Flowers are actually the most difficult form to paint because you have to capture their materiality, surface, color, and spatial aspects. I hope that people who encounter my flower paintings will have the same glorious experience as if they were looking at real flowers." "It was raining, so I cut flowers, put them in vases, and started painting. Years later, it was the same process, but by then I was more interested in the flowers than the vases."
