About the Artist
Young-han Chung is known as a mid-career artist representing post-millennial surreal photorealism. However, her figurative paintings, which utilize language and contemporary photographic images, are in the form of 'composite collage' combined with conceptual art.
Chung uses a dual strategy of subverting the semiotic meaning system of images that are naturally produced and consumed through media, and re-recognizing the lost value of the artificiality (or fiction) of images. It aims to restore the lost sense of 'mythos' by inducing the viewer to actively interpret the work and reflect on the passive way of viewing. Mythos refers to the original language (root) conveyed by mythological archetypes, and in a broader sense, it is the true allegory of literature and art, including poetry.
